Improv meets Vibe Coding

2 Jul 20252 minute read

With AI, everything is shortening... time wise. Matt Holden had a thought: “Is it now possible to do improv parallel software creation?” so he signed up for a 5 minute slot at the Denver AI Builders meetup, gulped, and showed up ready for the improv gods to do their magic.

The Improv Coding Experience

Matt, who I had the pleasure of working with at Google... and now lives around the corner which allows us the chance to go on walks and talk about all things AI, rocks up with some terminals ready to run Claude Code.

In true improv style, he asks the crowd for input on what to build, and ends up with: “Cursor for Basket Weavers.... With a brand feel of preppy, tope, and Miami Vice”.

It’s time to start, and to do so Matt uses voice (I use Whispr Flow for this myself) to get things going.... which was kicking off the notion of a “fuzzy compiler”. Specs were created for actions, with a product-brief.md parent, and a simple wrapper script made sure to define the architecture of the system so it could constrain the LLMs as much as possible and keep them on the happy path. Below is what the spec broadly looks like:

The parts and pieces behind the it look like this:

But did he land the final creation? I don’t want to ruin the punchline... give the video a watch and see for yourself!

Here we can see how powerful specs are even for vibing!
